The two questions that come to mind for me are: 1) How much freedom do the rules allow? F1 engineers are very good at taking advantage of anywhere that the rules don't lock them down; they soon got around the requirement to have the side impact structures in a certain area, which freed up a ton of space in front of the side pods so we ended up with insanely complex bargeboards. Will the rules prevent this kind of thing? It should be easy enough to do by mandating a certain cross-section of any protrusion. 2) How much will the slipstream be harmed if the dirty air is thrown upwards? It's all very well being able to follow through a corner, but you need to be faster along the straight than another car to be able to pass them. If the slipstream is less effective, it might be difficult to overtake for a whole other reason. I hope I'm wrong on both of those, and that the new rules package works as intended. We've seen so many times that the best-intentioned rule changes result in ugly cars that look nothing like the concept to allow designers to take every advantage of grey areas (I stull shudder at the thought of the phallic noses from a few years ago...)

I remember In the days when Men were Men and the birds used to fly backwards to keep the sun out of their eyes. The new 21st Century Cars look crap IMHO. Peacock looking front Wings that cost the price of a small house, DRS for those drivers that don't have the balls to overtake. '78 '79 JPS Lotus was a thing of beauty. Real Drivers don't need DRS, KERS --- mmmh maybe that's progress, The Halo, well we can't lose any more drivers. In the Old days you didn't hear the tyres squeal, now with a turbo muffling that beast of an Engine, Pffh.

Another way to reduce dirty air would have been to increase the end plates of the rear wing. Imposing that they must extend at least 5cm behind and 7cm above the trailing edge, without any opening less than 15 cm from any part of the wing, would dramatically reduce the vortex. That would also reduce the drag.

My immediate thoughts are how dangerous high curbs are going to be to these cars, damage to the floor is going to have an much bigger effect than currently. And also the floors rigid and layer design may be easier to damage than current one piece slightly higher floors. Interesting it may also stop drivers taking so many risks using extra width on cornering entrance and exit

In my humble opinion, all of these changes in the name of spectacle betray the concept of F1 as a proving ground for the best possible race car. Plus, wings are against the open wheel concept, exactly because they enclose the wheels, impeding the free air flow over the tires that should be paramount to "open wheel".

Yes, but the old way is best for the lead car, which is racing after all. If you're in front, your advantage. So, get to the front. That's how you win. Duh. On the other hand, it does improve the handling of the cars behind, as there is only one in front, and everyone else is behind. So from the safety standpoint, OK. My point of being in front to win still stands. That's racing.

Can't they just make a new rule that says: downforce reduction of standard car (model provided by FIA) at 5 meters behind the rear tire is not allowed to be less than 20% in standardized wind tunnel test. That way teams get an incentive to come up with innovative ways to create as much as possible clean air behind them. You don't need tons of rules about where each wing is allowed to be and what size and you can't have loopholes to those rules.

Maybe not, like the hybrid motors are getting better, the Drs wing part was over rated.i think 2022 is over with too much down force and dirty air will be a thing of the past.

17 soat oldin
Zak
Zak

Short answer: Not currently implemented. With the new F1 car design most of the downforce is now generated through ground effects which first came into prominence in the 70s the most notable example being the BT46B aka the Fan car. Ground effects is being used in LM cars as it generates a greater downforce than a wing alone with some cars even opting to remove the wing entirely however that's mainly due to limitations due to regulations a wing is still good. DRS is only useful for the straights as the new wing doesn't give no where near as much downforce as the current mechanical wing which opens up to reduce drag (DRS). To add DRS to the new wing design they will have to add more mechanical parts making the car heavier and it will not have as big of an impact as it does when compared to the current wing design so arguably DRS is not necessary for the next season of racing.

18% less downforce, So we need a bigger drs in order to be able to overtake in the straights.

18 soat oldin
WassapDude94
WassapDude94

Less downforce means less drag, higher straight line top speed, and less dirty air which means easier following through corners. DRS exists because cars lost time following through corners, and so it was made up on the straights with it. If cars can follow eachother easily, DRS has lost it's reason for existing

Well I guess change is inevitable, but I'm not a real fan of this new design. I get that it is just a reference design and that the teams will do what they think is best causing cars to look different, so I'll wait and see. The thing I dislike most is the size of the front wing, it looks like a bloody snow plow or bulldozer bucket! I wish they wouldn't make it so, deep I guess, from front to the back of the wing is just ugly.

I'd be curious if a mandated rear-wing endplate spoiler like aircraft have on wingtips would also help reduce end vortices. Quite excited for the new cars, hopefully they're faster due to the increase in clean underfloor DF - next step is to hopefully lighten them up a bit.
